Sweden is providing Nefco with an additional SEK 700 million (approximately EUR 65 million) to support Ukraine’s green recovery. The new contribution focuses on three key areas:
SEK 400 million will be allocated to two ongoing programmes implemented by SALAR International and funded by Sida: Waste Management for Ukraine (WM4U), implemented by SALAR International in partnership with Avfall Sverige, and Polaris: Supporting Multi-Level Governance in Ukraine. The additional funding will enable the programmes to build on existing results, supporting the modernisation of municipal waste management systems, decentralisation reform, and post-war recovery within a coordinated Team Sweden approach.
“This collaboration demonstrates Sweden’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s recovery and a greener future,” comments Malin Perhult, Head of the Ukraine unit at Sida. “By combining Swedish resources and Nefco’s expertise, we aim to deliver tangible improvements in municipal services, environmental sustainability, and quality of life for Ukrainian citizens.”
More than twenty years of successful cooperation between Sida and Nefco have laid a solid foundation for a new phase of support. Thanks to Swedish funding, communities will receive resources to strengthen institutional capacity, restore infrastructure, and implement sustainable municipal waste management solutions. The implementation of these plans is ensured through the professional synergy of Nordic expertise: Nefco acts as fund manager and is responsible for procurement, working in close cooperation with SALAR International and Avfall Sverige.
