Government allocates funding for 130 future academic lyceums to create modern educational spaces

Almost UAH 700 million will be allocated to 130 future academic lyceums in 22 regions of Ukraine – the Government has finalised the allocation of state subsidies for the creation of modern educational spaces.

The communities will use the funds to purchase teaching materials, educational, computer and multimedia equipment, as well as furniture for biology, geography, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and STEM laboratories. This will help create modern educational spaces in line with the approaches of the New Ukrainian School. Renovation work will be funded from local budgets.

The Government has previously allocated over UAH 459 million to 85 educational institutions and UAH 223.5 million to 42 educational institutions. Today, a further UAH 17.1 million has been allocated to three more educational institutions. This completes the allocation of the subsidies to all 130 institutions set to receive state support in 2026.

The institutions selected through a competitive selection process have received the funds. Applications were submitted by the founders of the educational institutions, and the evaluation was conducted by a selection committee of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine using a ranking system.

The following factors were taken into account during the selection process:

  • the level of provision of modern educational infrastructure in the community;
  • the capacity of the institution to make effective use of modern educational spaces in the teaching process;
  • experience in implementing educational projects, particularly in science and mathematics.

The modernisation of educational spaces is one of the key priorities of the reform of the New Ukrainian School. Modern classrooms and STEM laboratories create the conditions for practical learning, helping students to explore, experiment, and acquire knowledge through their own experiences, whilst enabling teachers to use modern teaching approaches.

The Government has been consistently investing in the creation of a modern educational environment, because the conditions in which children learn have a direct impact on the quality of education. The modernisation of educational spaces, together with the reform of the curriculum and the professional development of teachers, shapes a school where students acquire the knowledge and develop the skills necessary for life, further learning, and their future professions.

In total, the Government has allocated UAH 3.2 billion in 2026 for the modernisation of educational spaces in general secondary education institutions:

  • UAH 1.3 billion – for the creation of modern educational spaces in gymnasiums;
  • UAH 1.2 billion – for pilot academic lyceums that are implementing the reform of specialised senior secondary education;
  • UAH 700 million – for the creation of modern educational spaces in future academic lyceums, which will operate in the network of specialised senior secondary schools from 2027.
