UCORD “Renaissance Clusters” grant programme: How Kuialnyk Estuary turns into tourist and creative cluster

The Kuialnik Estuary in Odesa region could form the basis for the development of the entire region. Its potential is not limited to unique natural landscapes, therapeutic mud, brine and mineral waters. It offers the opportunity to combine eco-tourism, local production, cultural heritage, recreation and new opportunities for communities.

The “Chumak Way” tourism and creative cluster aims to unlock this potential through cooperation between communities, environmental organisations, local businesses, and activists. The initiative is implemented with the support of the Swiss-Ukrainian “Ukraine’s Cohesion and Regional Development” (UCORD) project, as part of the “Renaissance Clusters” grant programme.

Three communities situated around the estuary, the Kuialnyk National Nature Park and local activists have joined forces to work towards a shared vision for the development of the territory.

The National Nature Park is responsible for preserving the region’s unique natural environment, while communities are responsible for developing their own territories. However, these tasks are inextricably linked: protecting the natural landscape and ensuring high-quality, well-planned development are mutually reinforcing activities.

Local producers, the tourism sector, cultural initiatives, academics and concerned residents are joining the cluster. For small businesses, this is an opportunity to avoid remaining isolated with their product and to become part of a shared tourism offering. Visitors to the region will be able to follow routes and get to know the local history, nature, cuisine and people, not just see the estuary.

With the support of UCORD as part of the “Chumak Way” project, the team has developed seven tourist routes, including two nature trails. They have also documented the area’s recreational areas, viewing points, natural features, history and culture. A development concept has also been created to serve as a roadmap for individuals or organisations looking to implement their own initiatives here.

Participants in the cluster envisage the future of the Kuialnyk Estuary as a modern balneological and recreational area offering rehabilitation facilities, tourist infrastructure, hotels, campsites, and glamping sites. However, a key condition for this development is preserving the natural landscape and its unique atmosphere.

The Chumak Way cluster is created within the framework of the UCORD “Renaissance Clusters” grant programme, which supports cultural and cultural-tourism partnerships as a tool for regional development. The winner of the programme, with the project “Chumak Way Tourism and Creative Cluster”, was the NGO ODESA WOW.

The Swiss-Ukrainian “Ukraine’s Cohesion and Regional Development” (UCORD) Project is implemented with the support of Switzerland, through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, by NIRAS Sweden AB.
